Native Plant Horticulture Foundation announces new Showcase Native Landscapes Program

To directly educate the public and drive increased demand for native landscaping, the Native Plant Horticulture Foundation will annually establish a highly visible, attractive and inspirational native landscape that demonstrates best practices in native landscape design, installation and maintenance. Sites will be selected based on their visibility to the public, desire to enhance public education and ability to maintain the landscaping. The landscape design will be acquired by competition open to professionals and students, and overseen by a panel of experienced landscape architects. The foundation will provide site owners with:

    Landscape design

Installation of plants and associated materials

Maintenance training and monitoring for the first year

    Program management and promotion

Insurance, permitting or other necessary costs

The foundation expects to raise in excess of $25,000 for the 2018 program and already has a donor who will provide matching funds up to $12,000 as part of the 2018 program’s fundraising campaign.

For the 2018 site, the Foundation is coordinating with the Bradenton Area Convention Center in Parrish, Florida, where the foundation has proposed revamping the entryway landscaping. The convention center has an existing commitment to native plants and sustainable landscaping and is visited by tens of thousands of residents and tourists every year. An agreement now in legal review is expected to go to the Manatee County Commission for final approval sometime in January or February 2018. The landscape design will be acquired by a competition run by the foundation. FANN is a sponsor of this competition and views it as the next step in the association’s own very successful Real Florida Landscapes Design Competition. The foundation will advertise the selected design, accept bids from qualified installation contractors, select a contractor by July, and have installation completed by September. A public unveiling of the landscape will be scheduled during the Native Plant Show held by FANN at the Bradenton Area Convention Center October 18-19, 2018.
